Beatty, an ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center board, argues that the board's decision to rename the building was an illegal act. She asserts that such a change requires an act of Congress, highlighting a potential breach of the rule of law and our constitutional principles.
"This is an affront to our democratic process and the memory of President Kennedy," Beatty stated in her lawsuit. "The Center was intended to be a non-partisan celebration of the arts, not a political tool. We must uphold the law and protect the integrity of our institutions."
The White House, now chaired by Trump and filled with his appointees, announced last week that the Kennedy Center would be renamed the "Trump-Kennedy Center." Beatty claims she was muted during the board's vote, preventing her from expressing her opposition to the name change.
"I was silenced, and my voice as a board member was ignored," Beatty told reporters. "I would never have supported this move, and I intend to fight for the Center's original purpose."
Beatty is represented by Norman Eisen, a White House ethics counsel during the Obama administration, and Nathaniel Zelinsky, co-counsel of the Washington Litigation Group. They argue that Trump and his associates had no lawful authority to rename the Kennedy Center, adding a layer of controversy to an already complex issue.
Last week, Trump claimed that his administration "saved" the Kennedy Center, stating, "We preserved this historic cultural landmark. It was in dire straits, physically and financially, and now it thrives."
