Hasbro shutters Atomic Arcade, but the fate of its big G.I. Joe project remains unsettled
But here’s the twist: the shutdown doesn’t mean the Snake Eyes game is definitively cancelled, even as most of the studio’s staff have been let go and the project’s future hangs in the balance. Hasbro says it’s evaluating a path forward, leaving the door ajar for a revival or a pivot under new leadership.
Atomic Arcade’s brief life
Atomic Arcade was launched in 2021 with backing from Hasbro and its Wizards of the Coast subsidiary. Its flagship project was a high-profile G.I. Joe game focused on Snake Eyes, the franchise’s famous covert operative. The goal was clear: deliver a polished, ambitious adaptation that could re-energize a G.I. Joe property that had drifted from the spotlight.
Over five years, the team poured work into building this AAA-style title, positioning it as a potential major revival for G.I. Joe. Yet now the studio has been shut down, and the path forward for the game is uncertain.
What happens next is unclear. Hasbro issued a statement to media indicating that decisions about the game aren’t final and that they will share updates later. In the meantime, many developers have posted on LinkedIn about their redundancies and the departures of colleagues, underscoring the scale of the upheaval.
One former employee summed up the situation: “Unfortunately Hasbro has made the call to close Atomic Arcade. I was with the studio for about a year, but from the start I felt the studio had tons of talent and potential. I’ll miss working with the team and wish everyone the best.”
Hasbro’s broader plans for gaming
The closure comes as a surprise against Hasbro’s heavier push into video games. The company announced in 2024 a substantial AU$1 billion investment in internal game development, signaling a long-term bet on building in-house studios and launching ambitious projects.
Dan Ayoub, who leads Wizards of the Coast’s digital product development, emphasized Hasbro’s intent to grow its gaming footprint. He described Hasbro as a centenarian company rooted in play, where gaming is a key, expanding entertainment form—and a natural fit for its future.
Hasbro’s strategy has been influenced by recent successes in the PC and console space, notably Baldur’s Gate 3, a game that demonstrated the potential of high-quality, internally supported collaborations. This momentum helped justify Hasbro’s push to cultivate internal studios that could deliver sweeping AAA experiences.
Projects in the Hasbro portfolio have included efforts like Exodus, a Matthew McConaughey–fronted title, and Warlock, a Dungeons & Dragons spin-off, signaling a broad ambition to diversify beyond traditional board-game adaptations.
Snake Eyes as a potential flagship
Back in 2024, Ayoub called the Snake Eyes game a “major shot in the arm” for the G.I. Joe franchise, signaling that the project was viewed as a flagship title capable of redefining the brand in the digital space.
In the wake of Atomic Arcade’s shutdown, the game’s future is uncertain. It could be revived under a different studio, reimagined, or shelved entirely. Hasbro has not provided a firm verdict, and time will tell how the company chooses to realign its internal game development strategy.
Bottom line
Hasbro’s investment in internal game studios remains a central pillar of its long-term strategy, even as specific projects—like Atomic Arcade’s Snake Eyes—hit roadblocks. The question now is whether the game will return in any form, or whether Hasbro will pivot to new collaborations and projects that fit its refreshed plans for the company’s gaming division.
