Get ready for something truly special! The Paper Mill Playhouse is about to unveil its much-anticipated production of the Tony Award-winning musical "Come From Away," and we have an exclusive first look at what promises to be an unforgettable experience. This remarkable show opens on Sunday, February 8, with performances kicking off on Wednesday, February 4, and will continue until March 1, located at 22 Brookside Drive in Millburn, NJ.
This newly envisioned version of "Come From Away" stands out not only for its powerful storytelling but also because the actors will be performing live music on stage, adding a unique layer to the experience. Directed and choreographed by the talented Richard J. Hinds, the cast includes notable performers such as Jeannette Bayardelle from "Girl from the North Country" and Andréa Burns, who has graced the stage in productions like "The Notebook" and "In the Heights." Other cast members include John El-Jor, Nick Gaswirth, Lisa Howard, and many more exceptional talents, ensuring a captivating performance all around. The understudy team, featuring Molly Coyne, Travis Darghali, Brandi Knox, and Matthew Whennell-Clark, is also ready to step in to keep the show running smoothly.
At the heart of this poignant musical lies the true story of September 11, 2001, a day when the world was halted in shock and disbelief. However, the very next day, a small town in Newfoundland sprang into action, offering hospitality and comfort to 7,000 stranded airline passengers. "Come From Away" beautifully captures how fear transformed into friendship and how strangers became like family through this extraordinary act of kindness. With a blend of heartfelt emotion, humor, and an engaging score, the show features book, music, and lyrics by the talented duo Irene Sankoff and David Hein.
The creative minds behind this production include Sam Groisser for music direction, Nate Bertone for scenic design, Michelle J. Li for costume design, and several others who contribute their expertise in lighting, sound, and makeup design, ensuring every detail elevates the storytelling experience. Patricia L. Grabb serves as the Production Stage Manager, while casting is managed by ARC.
In addition to the performances, the Paper Mill Playhouse has organized a series of special discussions related to "Come From Away." On Saturday, February 7, following the 1:30 PM matinee, Producing Artistic Director Mark S. Hoebee will host a Q&A session featuring individuals whose real-life stories inspired the characters in the musical. Then, on Saturday, February 21, there will be another opportunity for audience members to engage with the cast after the 1:30 PM performance. Furthermore, on Wednesday, February 25, a special Q&A session will be held exclusively for students attending a matinee performance.
