The Astros Just Made a Move That Could Shake Up Their Roster—But Is It Enough?
In a recent development that has baseball enthusiasts buzzing, the Houston Astros have inked a minor league deal with infielder/outfielder CJ Alexander. According to his transaction tracker on MLB.com, the 29-year-old, represented by PSI Sports Management, has been assigned to the Triple-A Sugar Land team. But here's the intriguing part: he might just earn an invitation to the big league camp during spring training. And this is the part most people miss—Alexander’s journey could be more impactful than it initially seems.
Alexander’s major league experience is limited, with just 25 plate appearances across 10 games, resulting in four singles, no walks, and 11 strikeouts. However, his minor league performance tells a different story. In 2024, he showcased his potential with an impressive .302/.361/.559 slash line in Triple-A, earning a 130 wRC+. But 2025 was a different ballgame, as his numbers dipped to a .254/.335/.448 slash line and a 91 wRC+. Is this a sign of inconsistency, or just a temporary slump?
While his offensive stats might not jump off the page, Alexander brings something else to the table: defensive versatility. He’s played all four corner positions, a skill that could prove invaluable for the Astros. His journey through the league has been a rollercoaster—designated by the Royals in late 2024, claimed by the Athletics, and later passing through the Yankees and Dodgers before becoming a free agent at the end of the season. But here's where it gets controversial: Can a player with such a nomadic career find a stable role in Houston?
One thing’s for sure: the Astros are in need of left-handed batters, with Yordan Alvarez being the only lefty guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day roster. While Alexander isn’t the solution to this problem, he does add depth to the lineup. However, the Houston infield is already crowded, with Carlos Correa at third, Christian Walker at first, and Isaac Paredes as a reliable backup. Unless a spring trade shakes things up, Alexander’s best shot at playing time might be in the outfield corners, where he’ll compete with the likes of Cam Smith, Joey Loperfido, Zach Cole, and Zach Dezenzo, among others.
